Tall trees, abundant snakes, lazy turtles, flooded boardwalks, and quirky speed limits...welcome to the hidden gem of South Carolina - Congaree National Park! A 20,000-acre wilderness located 2 hours northwest of Charleston, this park was established in 1976, and designated as a national park in 2003.
We made a short, afternoon stop at Congaree to enjoy a quiet walk on the nature boardwalk after several busy days in the city...surprisingly, there was a large number of people exploring the various trails at the park.
Due to the large amount of rain they've received recently, a chunk of the 2.6-mile boardwalk loop was flooded. Apparently, it floods pretty regularly and can take up to 3 weeks to dissipate.
We saw a number of snakes sunbathing...none close enough to make us nervous though:)
One interesting quirk of this park is that their speed limits are very...quirky. Maybe it's because an unusual speed limit number catches the attention and they hope that it'll trigger drivers to actually check their speed? I don't know, but it's kinda funny. :)
If you are ever in the Charleston, South Carolina area...a detour to Congaree National Park is well worth the drive!
Until next time, God bless!
