To Finish or Not to Finish...That is the Question

Updated: Dec 3

During the summer, I began writing a story with the hope of submitting it to an anthology set for release in March. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline by just a smidge. And by just a smidge, I mean I wrote just under 2K words of what was supposed to be a 5-10K word short story...oops.

Honestly, I had forgotten about it until I was cleaning out some documents and rediscovered it today. Now I have to decide which category of projects I should put it into: To Finish - or - Not to Finish.

What do you think? Does the prologue catch your attention?

Fingerprints in the Frost: Prologue

Pulling her quilt tighter about her shoulders, Elizabeth tiptoed daintily to the window and peered into the stormy winter wonderland surrounding her cabin. The wind battered the house, blinding snow swirled around and blocked visibility, and freezing temperatures; it had been a day like this last year that had changed her life forever…that had ripped her beloved husband of three years from her embrace.

With a lonely sigh and one final glance at the sun, rising over the icy whiteness, Elizabeth wandered into the kitchen and made herself a cup of her favorite sweet peppermint coffee on the stove. The monotonous task allowed her mind to continue its melancholy meanderings, while simultaneously causing another pang of sadness to penetrate her heart as she pulled a solitary mug from the cupboard… its partner remaining empty and unused in the back corner. Its sudden retirement from use on that fateful day having never been interrupted.

Settling into the rocking chair in her living room, Elizabeth watched the dancing flames in the firepit. The warmth of her drink and the hearty fire seemed to enliven her thought life, and the vision of that heart-wrenching day, along with the events leading up to it, shimmered unwanted before her tired eyes.
