February 19, 2024: We Made It To Key West!

Sooo... would you believe me if I said we drove our 32+ foot long RV all the way down into the very crowded southernmost tip of the United States, parked on a street (illegally as we later found out when we returned to find a ticket on our windshield) and waited in a long (but pretty fast moving) line just to take the iconic Key West photo??? Here's the picture to prove it!

Yes, folks, go ahead and call us crazy, but we drove our big rig right into this cramped, party city and squeezed ol' Kram-A-Lot Inn into a street parking spot a few blocks away from the southernmost point photo op location. We definitely ran into a number of tricky situations trying to navigate the narrow streets, but Mom's tenaciousness and rad RV driving skills got us there eventually. Lol...We only stuck around long enough to take the photo and then back to the Florida mainland we headed...searching for open country where we could enjoy some fresh air without having to breathe in the scent of vehicle exhaust fumes permeating the narrow streets.

Definitely another 'been there, done that, don't need to go there again' situation, LOL.

Key West Facts:

  1. Key West is only 90 miles from Cuba...placing it closer to a foreign country than it is to Miami, FL.

  2. 42 bridges connect Key West to the mainland. This Overseas Highway is considered one of the most beautiful drives in the U.S. It really was lovely a fair amount of the drive.

  3. Chickens roam the streets of Key West, protected from harm by law, and are the unofficial Key West mascot. Descendents of Cuban cockfighting roosters that were released to survive on their own when that particular sport was outlawed, these scrappy fowl are as much a part of Key West as sun, sand, and hoards of people.

  4. You cannot park a vehicle any longer than 20 feet on Key West streets. We did not know this, as there was NO signage at the electronic pay station when we parked Kram-A-Lot Inn, nor anywhere else as far as we could see. Thus the ticket when we returned from our 45-minute adventure to take the infamous photo.

  5. Key West traffic safety department is not highly sympathetic when you call in to respectfully protest the fact that there was no way for you to know not to park your 32 foot RV along the street because there is no signage.

  6. A parking ticket will cost you $95 in Key West. :(

Until next time, God bless!

Haha I love how it just progressed through the points of “we got a parking ticket, they aren’t sympathetic, and tickets are expensive” idk it just made me laugh
